What exactly is health? According to the World Health Organization, health is “a condition of full physical, emotional and social well being and not the absence of sickness and disease.” A wide variety of definitions have previously been used for various purposes. The most common definition used today is the concept of a “healthy body, mind and spirit.” This definition is considered by many, to be one of the most important aspects of a person’s overall well being.

In addition to the definition above, many other factors are considered when determining the overall wellbeing of a person. Many psychologists and sociologists consider the quality of relationships, the quality of education obtained, personal hygiene, physical health, attitude and behavior towards stress, spirituality, and culture, to name a few. All of these aspects define health and wellness. When adding to this list of qualities, the idea that there is a connection between diet and disease was introduced.

According to this continuum model, there is a connection between illness, disease, and poor health. The first two can be considered as separate entities, while the last is considered as an interconnected entity. However, public health and mental health often differ when it comes to how they achieve these goals. In other words, public health seeks to reduce the number of people with cardiovascular diseases, while mental health focuses on promoting wellness and reducing the burden of mental illness. For example, it is recommended that a public health agency to increase immunization rates to help reduce the burden of illness, while a mental health organization would focus its attention on improving the quality of life.

Public health and mental wellbeing share many goals, but they differ when it comes to how they go about achieving them. Public health focuses on preventing epidemics; however, it also looks at treating already-existing illnesses. Mental health on the other hand, works to promote wellness and reducing the burden of illness. When it comes to fighting epidemics, public health works towards creating a safe and clean environment. On the other hand, mental health fights against the presence of illness by making the living conditions more positive, while offering support for those who are suffering from the illness.
