The Definition of Health

A definition of health is crucial to any understanding of the concept. WHO defines health as complete physical, mental, and social well-being that excludes the presence of disease. According to the most recent State of Massachusetts Health Assessment (SHA), twenty percent of a person’s health is determined by genes, while fifteen percent of a person’s life is affected by socioeconomic and environmental factors. These social determinants are defined in terms of the way a person lives and interacts with society. These factors include money, power, and resources that shape a person’s environment and quality of life.

In the United States, for example, public health activities are funded primarily through taxation by national governments and donations. The objective of public health is to prevent and control disease, and to extend a person’s life. To promote optimum health, the public sector must implement principles of justice, participation, and collaboration. The Commission on Social Determinants of the World’s Population identifies the most important elements of a healthy community and proposes a common definition of health.

Global health is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “complete physical, mental, and social well-being”. The term “health” has become very broad, with many varying definitions. Nonetheless, the World Bank and the UN both define health as a state of physical, mental, and social well-being. As a result, it is important to understand and consider the different definitions of health in order to make informed decisions that lead to optimal health.

During the 20th century, the World Health Organisation (WHO) developed a constitution defining health as a condition of total physical and mental well-being. The WHO also identified the social and psychological aspects of health. It defined health as “the quality of one’s life, free from disease and from a sense of suffering.” In addition to promoting physical health, WHO defined health as a condition of complete well-being.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has defined health as a right. It has also stated that it is an inherent human right. It is a positive concept and a vital component of a society. People are motivated by their health if they feel it is a right. By promoting health, the WHO is addressing the individual and the social aspects of the disease. This, in turn, improves the quality of life of the population.

The World Health Organisation defines health as the state of a person’s well-being. Hence, it is not merely the absence of disease. Rather, it includes physical, mental, and social factors. For instance, a person’s health can be considered to be a person’s complete well-being. The WHO defines it as the absence of disease, but not disease alone. Moreover, it does not specify the cause of the disease.
