Sports – Physical As well As Mental
Sports refers to physical games pursued for the purposes of the challenge and the competitions they entail. In addition, it can also be defined as a game or competition where people engage in specific physical activities according to a set of established rules. This sport can be a competitive game or a competition between two teams, a boy and a girl, old and young etc. Today, there are several avenues via which one can get exposure to sports. Though these outlets are not very common in the normal course of events, sports have become so popular that television programs dedicated to sports have become a part of our day-to-day life.
Various types of sports can be segregated into two categories: physical games and mental games. A game that involves physical skills like weightlifting and bodybuilding is called a sport. A sport can also involve mental skills such as chess and reading. Today, people are more involved in some types of sports than in others. Those that involve intellectual skills like horseback riding, golf, tennis and billiards are known as intellectual sports.
The other category is competitive physical activity. This category of sports refers to sports where the participation is not based on natural talent but on strength, agility and stamina. A good example of this type of sport is track and field where the winner moves on to the championships. Another very popular competitive physical activity is running. Competitors run a race from beginning to end and use various training methods to achieve their goal.
It is not surprising to find that many athletes nowadays opt to take up sports as a career. This has become very possible as it provides one with an excellent platform of physical activities coupled with intellectual challenges. Sports help one to develop leadership skills, confidence and teamwork. Not only this, it also boosts self-esteem and reduces the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. In fact, there are many Olympic and world record holders who started out as sportsmen or women with humble beginnings.
One can easily take up sports as a profession if he or she wants to. There are many sports colleges that provide accredited sports degrees and certificate courses. Moreover, there are many organizations that help one prepare for an athletic career. Some of the most popular sports in the US include basketball, American football, baseball, field hockey, ice hockey, soccer, softball, track and field and wheelchair tennis. These sports have a very strong link with physical dexterity and mental abilities.
Competitions in sports like basketball, baseball, softball and wheelchair tennis are quite exciting. However, competition is not the only factor that makes sports enjoyable. Indeed, it is also about teamwork and maintaining a good relationship between teammates and coaches or other team members. Most importantly, sports teach how to respect each other and work as a team. With such qualities, you can definitely say that sports are more than just physical activities.
